Swakopmund, Namibia - African leaders yesterday denounced renewed violence in Angola and told the former rebel UNITA movement to cease its attempts to delay the final implementation of peace in the oil and diamond rich country.

Leaders from the 14-nation Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) gathered behind closed doors for two hours of intensive talks in this seaside town. They backed the Angolan government against UNITA and resolved to step up diplomatic initiatives to find an amicable solution to the conflict. They told Mr Jonas Savimbi, former leader of UNITA, to resume his obligations under a 1994 peace pact.
