Voting in the European Parliament and local elections, as well as in the referendum to give constitutional recognition to local government, will begin at 8 a.m. on Friday, June 11th. The polls will close at 9 p.m. (In Northern Ireland, the European election will be on June 10th, and voting will take place between 7 a.m. and 10 p.m.)

The majority of voters will be asked to cast their three votes - on different-coloured ballot papers - in a single ballot box. However, where the electorate is entitled to vote for both a county council and an urban council there will be two boxes.

The use of just one box will involve the separation of votes before counting can begin, a process which is expected to take several hours in each constituency.

Votes cast in the local elections will be counted on Saturday, June 12th, along with the votes cast in the referendum.

The counting of votes in the European elections will take place on the next day, Sunday, June 13th. The final count does not take place until the polls have closed in all European countries. However, unofficial results will probably be known before then.

Those eligible to vote in the Republic but whose names do not appear on the electoral register may apply for entry to the supplementary register. Applications should be made to the relevant county council or corporation not later than May 24th.
