A British army bomb disposal team this morning made safe a device that was sent to the home of a member of the Tyrone District Policing Partnership.

The incendiary device contained in a padded envelope was sent to the home of the chairman of the Strabane DPP, Mr Tom McBride, yesterday evening.

It is the second time the SDLP councillor has been singled out.

In September, before the Tyrone group had held its first public meeting, a number of members were attacked during a campaign by dissident republicans.

A hoax device was left outside Mr McBride's front door, while a car belonging to independent member Mr Arthur McGarrigle was burned at Our Lady of Mercy girls school in Strabane.

Another member, Ms Mary McCrea, had her car destroyed in nearby Sion Mills.

Mr McBride said today he was shocked and disappointed that elements within the community were still prepared to target members in this way.

"I would ask them to desist. They only represent a small minority of interests and generally the community is swinging behind the DPPs.

The boards were introduced under the Patten reforms of Northern Ireland's police force. SDLP leader Mr Mark Durkan accused those who carried out the attack of cowardice.

He said: "The courage of Tom McBride in the face of the latest attacck serves to illustrate the cowardice of those willing to jeopardise the lives of small children by sending a device of this nature to his home.

"Tom's dedication to the achievement of accountable and effective policing in the Strabane area is supported by the vast majority of local people who want nothing to do with any of the attacks."
