Irish citizens have been warned to avoid political demonstrations if they are travelling in Iran following violence in the wake of last Friday’s controversial presidential elections.
The Department of Foreign Affairs updated its travel advice today warning of ongoing disturbances in Tehran and other urban centres. The security situation elsewhere in Iran remains “stable”, the DFA said.
“The political situation remains volatile and further demonstrations can be expected. Citizens should avoid political gatherings, monitor the media and contact the Embassy for updates on the situation,” the DFA said on its website.
The Department itself has a number of staff working in the Irish Embassy in Tehran.
Travellers have also been advised to purchase comprehensive travel and medical insurance. It is also advisable to take a number of photocopies of your passport and carry a photocopy of your passport at all times.
