Shares in Diageo have fallen after news that its Guinness Irish brewing operations are affected by a strike for the first time in over 25 years.

At 2.30 p.m., shares in Diageo were down 1.2 per cent or 8½p at 707p on the London Stock Exchange.

A company spokeswoman says industrial action is underway in Ireland over plans to close a packaging plant in Dundalk, Co Louth.

But she says she is unable to confirm how many workers were taking part or to what extent brewing operations are being affected.

Guinness wound down operations at its five Irish breweries yesterday in advance of the strike.

The company has estimated that a prolonged strike would cost it £15 million a week, including £5 million in exports.
