US pop diva Diana Ross was arrested for alleged drink driving yesterday after a motorist reported a swerving vehicle on roads in the western US state of Arizona, police said.
A breath test administered to 58-year-old Ross after she was stopped in the early hours of the morning showed that she had more than twice the legal limit of alcohol in her system.
"It would be what is considered extreme DUI (driving under the influence)," said Sergeant Judy Altieri of the Tucson police department, revealing that Ross registered 0.20 per cent of alcohol in her system.
The legal limit in the state is 0.08 per cent of alcohol, while a blood-alcohol level of above 0.15 is considered "extreme."
Ms Altieri said the former 1960s Supremes singer and latterday solo star was "polite and co-operative" when she was stopped and arrested.
She will appear in a local court on a misdemeanour charge at a date yet to be set.
Officers were called to the scene in Tucson's eastern suburbs after motorists reported a white car swerving in the road.
No further details of the arrest or why she was in Tucson were immediately available and Ross's representatives in Los Angeles were not immediately available for comment.
In May this year, Ross checked into a drug and alcohol rehabilitation center in Los Angeles before launching a summer concert tour.
