Mr Conor Haughey is expected to start the main race at the Dingle Regatta this year. It will be only the second time his father, former taoiseach Mr Charles Haughey, has not started the race in 40 years.
A former senior rower of a winning crew in the main race in Dingle, Mr Conor Haughey will fire the opening rifle shot that is the traditional start to the race, organisers have confirmed. However, the invitation was extended first to Mr Haughey senior, Mr Eddie Hutchinson, chairman of the Dingle Regatta said.
"I spoke to him myself and he felt he was not up to it," Mr Hutchinson said. The crowds as well as his health were factors in his decision. The Haughey yacht, the Celtic Mist, is expected today in the harbour. The former taoiseach is holidaying at his Blasket Island home of Inishvickillane.
Organisers have not ruled out the possibility that he may make a surprise appearance at the regatta which begins on Saturday and continues over the weekend. Dingle for the first time is hosting the all-Ireland currach and naomhóg championships and as well as hundreds of crew members, thousands of supporters are expected in what will be a busy weekend in the town.
Mr Haughey is held in great affection in much of west Kerry, and is credited with revitalising Dingle harbour through various grants and assistance.
