Hundreds of visitors to An Daingean in west Kerry swelled the ranks of the traditional St Stephen's Day straw-costumed wren festival yesterday, writes Anne Lucey.
Some of this year's collection will go towards the campaign to have the official name An Daingean replaced by Dingle/Daingean Uí Chúis, according to a spokesman for the Green and Gold Wren group at O'Flaherty's Pub in Bridge Street.
This year saw a revival of the Quay Wren group representing the harbour area, along with the John's Street, Goat Street and the Green and Gold groups. The traditional straw costumes with tall hat and broad shoulder were made in early December.
Led by fife and drums, the wrens set off at lunchtime to visit houses, pubs and pay an annual visit to the Dingle hospital.
