There is no indication the Vatican will accept Cardinal Desmond Connell's resignation despite media speculation about his position, according to a spokeswoman from the Dublin Diocese.
Cardinal Connell - as with all bishops when they reach the age of 75 - offered his resignation to the Vatican two years ago.

Although the Vatican did not immediately accept the resignation, the Cardinal is prohibited from making major diocesan decisions that would have strong implications for his successor. For instance, the Cardinal is not permitted to appoint the two auxiliary bishops now required by the Dublin Diocese.
He is also precluded from selling diocesan lands such as Clonliffe College. These two issues have fueled media speculation today regarding the Cardinal's position.
Were the Vatican to decide to act on his resignation offer, it could give Cardinal Connell as little as 24 to 48 hours notice of its decision. However, considering the Cardinal's high standing in Rome, it is unlikely he would receive such short notice, and he can carry out his duties as Archbishop of the Dublin Diocese indefinitely until the Vatican decides to replace him.
A spokeswoman for the Archdiocese said that there was no indication from the Vatican that it intended to replace the Cardinal.
Cardinal Connell was appointed to the Diocese 15 years ago. Cardinal Cahal Daly was 79 when his successor was appointed to the Diocese of Armagh.
A Cardinal is allowed to vote for a new Pope until he reaches the age of 80.
