The ESB, Bord Gáis and Airtricity are to suspend disconnections during the current bad weather.
Speaking on RTE's Morning Ireland programme Brian Montayne, ESB Corporate Communications manager said customers in arrears would not face disconnections during the current cold spell and over the Christmas holiday period.
"It was a very easy decision to make. It is not our intention to put any further pressure on customers at this difficult time," he said. The suspension will remain in place "until conditions improve".
There were more than 500 disconnections during the month of November.
A spokesman for Bord Gáis said 125 people had been disconnected in November. He said the company was concentrating on encouraging people to join payment plans and to accept pre-payment meters in an effort to avoid "getting to the disconnection stage". The company currently has 30,000 customers on payment plans.
Airtricity suspended disconnections for non-payment of bills on November 24th in light of the worsening weather conditions and this suspension will "remain in effect until weather conditions improve," according to a spokesman.
The company disconnected 118 customers between November 1st and 24th.
Neither Bord Gáis or Airtricity are experiencing any power outages caused by the weather conditions.
Meanwhile, the energy regulator confirmed yesterday that charges for reconnecting electricity or gas are to be halved to ease the hardship faced by thousands of householders unable to pay their energy bills.
The measure, which will take effect from January for 12 months, will cut almost €100 off the current cost of reconnection to electricity and gas supplies. The Commission for Energy Regulation has decided to go ahead with the change, despite opposition from the utility companies.
At present, it costs an electricity customer €86 plus VAT to have their supply disconnected, and €88 to be reconnected.
Both charges must be paid before supply is restored. The charge for disconnection and reconnection of gas supply is €61.74.
