The Labour Relations Commission is expected to intervene in a dispute that could lead to 200 non-branch ATM machines running out of cash this weekend.

Employees of the security cash delivery firm, Brinks, are refusing to accept restructuring proposals on health and safety grounds.

In a statement yesterday the Irish Payment Services Organisation said the machines affected were in Dublin south-east and north-east.

"Customers are advised that the dispute affects a portion of AIB, Bank of Ireland and Ulster Bank ATMs. Customers in the affected regions will have access to cash at branch ATMs and at retailer ATMs in a variety of locations," the statement added. "Customers who have a laser card are advised to avail of the cashback facility when purchasing goods and services."

In a statement, SIPTU said that contrary to some media reports, its members at Brinks were not involved in industrial action and were available to work normally.

"There is no reason for any disruption to services. The company attempted to introduce new vehicles and procedures unilaterally today. SIPTU believes these pose a health and safety threat to the staff involved. Union members remain available to work normally and the union has indicated to the Labour Relations Commission that it is willing to become involved in an early hearing of the issues."
