GARDAI in Dundalk have arrested four local men for questioning about an attack earlier this week on the home of a detective garda.

The detective works in Dundalk and he and his family were woken by the sound of stones being thrown at their home at about 1 a.m. last Tuesday.

No one was injured, but damage was caused to the house.

The men who were arrested are all from Dundalk, and are aged between 34 and 54. They include the chief steward and chairperson of the 32 County Sovereignty Movement's ard fheis, held on June 24th.

Two of the men were released earlier in the week and yesterday morning gardai released a third man without charge.

The fourth man was arrested on Thursday afternoon. He can be held in custody until this afternoon before being released or charged.

In a statement, the 32 County Sovereignty Movement criticised the arrests, saying they were a political round-up of delegates to the group's recent ard fheis.

In the statement, the group's public relations officer, Mr Joe Dillon, said: "The arrests are clearly a political round-up of individuals who attended an open political conference aimed at building opposition to British rule and achieving Irish national sovereignty.

"Republicans have never before been intimidated by heavy-gang tactics and the republican grassroots will lose trust and credibility in any political coalition which wields such tactics against republicans."
