The British army has defused a pipe bomb found outside a telephone aerial site in Co Down. Police believe dissident republicans are responsible.

A police spokesman said the "crude pipe bomb-type device" was found outside the site near St John's Point in Clough.

The remains of a second device, which had exploded, were found inside but no damage was caused, the spokesman added.

The area was searched after a telephone call in the early hours of Wednesday morning. A number of items were removed for technical examination.
