Gardaí investigating the murder of a 57-year-old woman in Midleton in east Cork are hoping that forensic tests on fingerprints and other DNA evidence found at the murder scene will help them progress their inquiry, reports Barry Roche.

Although gardaí have not for operational reasons disclosed the findings of a postmortem examination on mother of three Catherine Smart by State Pathologist Prof Marie Cassidy, it is understood she died from a blow or blows to the head on Sunday morning.

The investigation team has released without charge a man in his 40s arrested for questioning about Ms Smart’s murder. Ms Smart’s body has been released and her removal will take place from O’Farrell’s Funeral Home in Midleton at 7.30pm tonight to the Church of the Holy Rosary.
