The case against a Cork doctor charged with 237 counts of sexual and indecent assault on 43 women has been put on hold pending the outcome of a judicial review application in the High Court. At Cork District Court yesterday, Judge David Riordan put a stay on the charges against Dr James Barry (72), of Lauriston Lodge, Glanmire, covering the period 1966-94.

Dr Barry's barrister, Mr Pat Horgan, told Judge Riordan that his client had applied to the High Court on November 17th for a judicial review because of the way his case was handled during the past two years. Dr Barry had also sought the judicial review on the grounds that the charges against him no longer exist as they were abolished by the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Person Act (1997).

The judge said he was now disqualifying himself from the case and he put a stay on the charges pending the review.
