THE IRISH Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals has realised €190,000 from the sale of a house that was bequeathed to the society by dog lover Dr Maura Lernihan.

The former GP bequeathed her home in the north Clare spa town of Lisdoonvarna to the society before she died in August 2007.

The property was initially put on the market for €350,000 two years ago, and the ISPCA had no takers. In April, the ISPCA withdrew the property at auction when it failed to attract a single bid and the society considered putting the house up for raffle in a national initiative to raise funds.

Chief executive of the society Noel Griffin said: “We want to do a particular project and are considering putting in place a mobile neutering service for dogs across the country funded from the house sale.”

Dr Lernihan wasn’t personally known to the staff at the ISPCA, but Mr Griffin said the charity had taken in her two dogs following her death.
