Snooker:  Joe Perry reached the quarter-finals of the China Open today in bizarre circumstances when his opponent, Michael Holt, conceded the deciding frame despite only trailing 19-0.

Holt, notorious for showing his emotions, had led 4-2 but lost the eighth frame on the black and could not recover his composure.

"I was completely gone and to carry on would have wasted everyone's time," said Holt, the world number 24.

"When I look back I'll probably regret it because it was unprofessional, but it was the second match in a row I'd lost from 4-2 up and it was on my mind."

Perry, ranked 14th, was stunned by Holt's decision to offer his hand with 11 reds remaining on the table.

"I'm in a state of shock," he said. "He left me a red from a safety and shook my hand but you couldn't say I was going to win it from there.

"I don't feel like I've won. This is the worst I've ever felt after winning a snooker match. Michael is a really close friend. He came to my wedding. I just hope he's okay."

Ireland's Ken Doherty is safely through to the quarter-finals after easing past England's Ricky Walden 5-2 in their second round encounter.

Mark Williams remains on course for a fifth ranking title on Asian soil by reaching the quarter-finals.

Williams whitewashed Scottish qualifier Scott MacKenzie 5-0 to stay in the hunt for the £30,000 top prize.

John Higgins beat Peter Ebdon 5-0. PA
