Derry and Monaghan will contest the proposed eight-week bans handed out to two of their players in the wake of last month’s fractious Ulster championship clash at Celtic Park. The counties will also seek to overturn the €10,000 fines imposed by the GAA’s Central Competitions Control Committee.

Derry will attempt to have midfielder Fergal Doherty’s two month ban reduced but have accepted the eight week sanction handed to replacement forward Brian Mullan.

Monaghan have opted not to accept the suspension received by Tommy Freeman and, as with Doherty, will request a personal hearing.

Doherty was sent off for two yellow cards during the game but this was later upgraded to a straight red card following the use of video evidence concerning an incident where he is seen kicking at Monaghan’s Dick Clerkin.

Mullan was also captured on camera appearing to knee Conor McManus in the groin whereas Freeman was involved in a tangle with Derry’s Kevin McGuckin.
