The Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources, Mr Dermot Ahern has named Mr John Doherty as the new chairman of the Commission for Communications Regulation (ComReg).
Mr Doherty will take the chair of the regulatory body on December 1st, replacing Ms Etain Doyle who announced he decision to step down from the post last month.
Mr Doherty has served as a commissioner with ComReg since December last year. Previously he was responsible for new business development at IDA Ireland.
He has been appointed for a one-year term.
Mr Ahern said his term would coincide with important developments in the industry, including the introduction of flat rate internet packages, mobile number portability and a new regulatory framework.
Mr Doherty's appointment has been welcomed by Fine Gael's communications spokesman Mr Simon Coveney.
