MR BOB DOLE, campaigning in New Mexico in a desperate last ditch effort to win the White House, acknowledged yesterday that he was losing his voice but was never going to surrender his principles. "My voice may change but I will still keep my word," Mr Dole said after arriving from Arizona, where he gained endorsement from an unlikely quarter.

The Republican challenger managed to convince about 1,000 supporters to greet him in the chilly predawn hours at a diner in Phoenix. Once there Mr Dole got a surprising boost when Mr Ross Perot's state chairman from his 1992 campaign called on the Texas billionaire's supporters to vote for Mr Dole.

The former Senate leader was to hit six states on day three of his 96 hour, round the clock "campaignathon".

But the blitz came under fire from Mr Clinton's camp when the 73 year old Mr Dole took time out for a nap and a shower on Sunday.
