The Donegal senior football squad has criticised its own county board over the procedures used to appoint a new manager.

Charlie Mulgrew and Declan Bonner had been expected to be ratified at Wednesday night's county board meeting but instead former All-Ireland winner John Joe Doherty is now back in the running to succeed Brian McIvor.

Doherty, who was originally offered the position but failed to reach agreement with the board on a number of issues, addressed the meeting and agreed to meet the interview panel again.

Following Wednesday's meeting,  Declan Bonner yesterday stated his intention to distance himself from any further role with Donegal football until the officers in charge of the football resign.

"The squad recently conveyed its views on the removal of Brian McIver and offered to consult with the Board during the selection process to find a suitable replacement. Although a commitment was given by the Board executive that the squad would indeed be contacted, no communication was received by the players during the process," the statement said.

The statement added that the squad had "no issues" with with any of the candidates for the manager's position.
