The North Western Health Board confirmed last night that a young girl is being treated in Letterkenny General Hospital for meningitis.
The girl is 19 months old and comes from Letterkenny. She was admitted on Tuesday night when it was determined that she had a meningococcal infection. Her condition has been described by the health board as stable.
Last night, a spokeswoman for the board said that anyone who had been in contact with the girl had been identified and was being assessed.
The board's public health specialist, Dr Anne Shannon, last night reminded parents that immediate recognition of the condition is the key to successful treatment.
