Donegal islands get development grants

Islands off the coast of Donegal are to get nearly €500,000 to improve roads, piers and sea walls.

Islands off the coast of Donegal are to get nearly €500,000 to improve roads, piers and sea walls.

The largest beneficiary of the grants from the Department of Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs is Arranmore Island, which has a population of around 540 people.

It is to receive funds for road repairs, water pumps, coastal protection and fire engine equipment.

The funding was announced by the Minister for Community, Rural & Gaeltacht Affairs, Éamon Ó Cuív TD.

Inisbofin and Innisfree are to receive grants of €3,000 each for lifebelts; Tory Island will receive €10,000 to pay for boxes to transport waste to the mainland and €57,000 for road improvements.

The other islands to benefit are Gabhla, Inch Island and Oileán Rua. Donegal County Council is also providing €272,500 in funding.

There are 33 inhabited islands around the coast of Ireland , with permanent populations ranging from just one to 900 on the largest island.
