Mrs Dorothy Mary Gageby, the wife of former editor of The Irish Times, Mr Douglas Gageby, has died peacefully at her home in Dublin.
Mrs Gageby, who was in her 80s, had requested that her funeral should take place privately and news of her death was not released until after the funeral.
Mrs Gageby was the eldest daughter of Mr Seán Lester, who was the League of Nations High Commissioner in Danzig and later head of the International Labour Office in Geneva.
Her father's work meant that Dorothy Mary spent many years of her youth in those two cities. Before the outbreak of the second World War, she was sent home to Dublin with her mother, Elizabeth Ruth (née Tyrell), and her two younger sisters.
On her return she studied at Trinity College Dublin.
A plaque in City Hall, Belfast, lists the name of her grandfather William Tyrell, as a member of Belfast City Council.
Also on the plaque, coincidentally, is the name of Robert Gageby, grandfather of the man she met in Dublin and later married.
She and Mr Gageby were married in July 1944. They had four children: Susan, who is Mrs Justice Denham of the Supreme Court, John, Sally and Patrick, who is a senior counsel.
Mrs Gageby is survived by her husband, Douglas, her four children, sons-in-law, daughters-in-law, her grandchildren and her two sisters.
