Graeme Dott is heading for the Embassy World Championship semi-finals after continuing to dominate his match with David Gray in Sheffield this morning.

The Larkhall-based Scot leads his Surrey rival 9-3 at the mid-session interval of his so far low-key quarter-final.

Dott began the day with a 6-2 lead and now requires four of the remaining 13 frames to earn a meeting with Matthew Stevens or Joe Perry.

The world number 12, who knocked out 1998 champion John Higgins in the previous round, took a 36-minute opening frame with a 33 clearance.

Gray, last season's Scottish Open winner, reduced his arrears back to four frames as the pace of the match quickened only marginally.

But it did not inspire him to make further inroads into Dott's lead and his opponent clinched the 11th frame with a run of 65 and also the 12th, 70-41.

Some members of the audience had come expecting to see Ronnie O'Sullivan complete his quarter-final with Anthony Hamilton.

But the Rocket's 13-3 win with a session to spare on Tuesday night meant they were watching a more soporific brand of snooker.

Dott and Gray had a further four frames to complete before they resume this evening, unless Dott managed to whitewash Gray and, like O'Sullivan, finish with a session to spare.
