A decision is to be made by the DPP as to whether to prosecute a 20-year-old woman who falsely alleged that she had been sexually assaulted in Cork last week.

The woman told gardaí a man attacked her as she made her way home from a nightclub in Washington Street in the city in the early hours of last Friday morning. She claimed that when she screamed her assailant fled the scene.

The woman said she returned to the nightclub to tell her friends what had happened and the alarm was raised.

The woman, who is from the north side of Cork city, was treated at the sexual assault unit in the South Infirmary Hospital on Friday morning. The area where the alleged sexual assault occurred was also cordoned off and technically examined.

However, the woman admitted the incident had never happened after being interviewed at length by gardaí over the weekend. A file on the case is to be prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.
