Wales' Bradley Dredge came agonisingly close to creating European Tour history as he narrowly missed out on a magical 59 in the Madeira Island Open.

He missed a birdie putt from nine feet on the 17th which would have taken him 13 under par for his round, and when a more difficult chance on the 18th also slipped by, he had to settle for a brilliant 60.

That was the 11th round of 60 on the tour - Ireland's Darren Clarke being the only man to do it twice - but only the fourth on a par 72 course.

The consolation was a 15 under par total of 201 and a massive eight-shot lead over Van Phillips, with Andrew Marshall a shot further back.

Dredge began the delayed third round just one shot off the lead held by Spain's Jesus Maria Arruti, but he wiped out that deficit on the first hole and proceeded to take advantage of the best conditions of the week with a vengeance.

Birdies at the first and third were followed by four in a row from the fifth to take him to the turn in 30, and when he eagled the 11th from 20 feet and followed that up with another hat-trick of birdies from the next, a 59 was definitely on the cards.

A par at the 15th was followed by a 15 foot birdie putt on the 16th, and that is when the 29-year-old from Cardiff realised he could create history.

Damian McGrane leads the Irish challenge but is 16 shots off the pace on one over after a three under 69 today.

Gary Murphy is three over after a 73 while Ryder Cup hero Philip Walton fired a 73 for a five over par total. Stephen Browne is well out of contention on 10 over.
