A Cork man who was sentenced to five months imprisonment for driving while intoxicated last May was banned from the road for 25 years for a similar offence committed on Monday of this week.

Judge Gerard Haughton described the man's previous record of more than 100 convictions as "appalling" and said the case was one that required the "maximum sentence".

Paul Quilligan (30), Ferny Road, Mahon, Co Cork, also received a jail term of six months at Waterford District Court yesterday for operating a mechanically propelled vehicle while intoxicated in Tramore, Co Waterford, on Monday evening.

He pleaded guilty to offences contrary to section 49 of the Road Traffic Act 1961 yesterday.

Quilligan, who has 108 previous convictions, was not incarcerated for a section 49 conviction on May 25th, as the sentence was under appeal, the court heard. Thirteen of the defendant's previous convictions were for similar offences, it emerged.

Quilligan was arrested at Newtown Cove, Tramore, shortly after 11pm on Monday and taken to Waterford Garda station.

Garda Moira Chapman said in evidence that following the arrest, he refused to co- operate, was "violent and aggressive" and would not give a blood or urine sample when requested.

Quilligan was not attending work due to an illness, the court heard.

Supt Dave Sheahan said the sentence was "fitting" and described as "disgraceful" Quilligan's "disregard for road traffic legislation and the safety and well-being of other road-users".
