An aircraft mechanic whose car swerved across the Belfast road near Swords and caused the death of another driver has received a two-year suspended sentence from Judge Kieran O'Connor at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court.

Kevin Glennon (21), of Kinnegad, Co Meath, pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing the death of John Sweeney (35), of Balbriggan, on March 29th, 1999.

Garda Val Gaye said Mr Sweeney and his fiancee, Ms Rachel O'Hara, had stopped at Blake's Cross junction at 7.30 a.m. He said Glennon was driving to work in Balbriggan in his Honda Civic which, without warning, crossed the road and smashed into the driver's side of Mr Sweeney's car.

Mr Sweeney died in hospital some time later from severe internal injuries.
