A woman who gave birth to a son in Mountjoy Prison has pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to importing cannabis valued at £25,000. Pumeza Panella Ndaba (28), with an address at Mdantsane 5219, East London, South Africa, wants to be deported as an undesirable alien so that her child will not be taken from her and put into care.
Ndaba was stopped at Dublin Airport on December 31st 1999 by Garda Breandan O Somarchain when she arrived on a flight from Brussels.
Garda Damien Rogers, of the Santry District Drugs Unit, told Mr Gerry O'Brien, prosecuting, that the 15kg of cannabis herb was contained in Ndaba's suitcase.
Judge Yvonne Murphy remanded Ndaba in custody for sentence next month.
