San Francisco - A team of California researchers think they have helped prevent HIV infection using a "morning-after" dose of drugs.
They said 401 people had come to their clinic after a risky sexual encounter or drug use episode, and, after getting a dose of HIV drugs, not a single one had developed HIV infection.
Mr Mitchell Katz of the California Department of Public Health and colleagues at the University of California San Francisco were testing post-exposure prophylaxis or PEP. They had used such emergency drug treatment on healthcare workers who got accidentally exposed to HIV and decided to see if it would work in the community.
