Michael Duberry's future at Leeds United is assured as it has today been revealed the centre-back signed a new five-year contract before Christmas.

Speculation had linked Duberry with a stg3million move to Premiership relegation strugglers Leicester, but Leeds chairman Peter Ridsdale has quashed the rumours.

Ridsdale said: "I am unaware of any interest from Leicester City or any other club in Michael Duberry. "Far from trying to sell Michael Duberry, I can confirm Michael actually signed a new five-year contract with Leeds United prior to Christmas.

"That emphasises our commitment to stand by Michael after what he has been through, and I was delighted Michael confirmed his commitment to the club by signing the deal."

Duberry has endured a nightmare ordeal since deciding to testify against close pal Jonathan Woodgate, who faced charges of grievous bodily harm with intent and affray in relation to an assault on student Sarfraz Najeib. He was cleared of the first charge but found guilty of the latter.

Former Chelsea defender Duberry recently revealed in a television programme he had received death threats after giving his evidence at Hull Crown Court.

Duberry was acquitted of conspiracy to pervert the course of justice in the first trial when he was a defendant, alongside Woodgate, Lee Bowyer and three other men.

The 26-year-old then became a prosecution witness in the re-trial, after the first collapsed following a prejudicial article in a Sunday newspaper.

Duberry did not want to take the stand and was in genuine fear for his life. But he was forced to do so, sparking claims it may bring an end to his career with Leeds.

His decision to remain at Elland Road has underlined his determination to put the events behind him.
