A man in his 40s, named locally as Mr Robert Campbell, remains in a critical but stable condition at Beaumont Hospital after suffering head injuries in the attack.

He was set upon at Marlborough Street at about 8.15 p.m. last Saturday.

One avenue of inquiry being pursued is that the man got into an altercation with another man with whom he had been drinking.

Detectives said they were trying to make contact with a Dublin Bus employee who spoke to two female gardaí on Marlborough Street at the time of the incident.

Recent serious assaults include the Grafton Street attack last April on a Sligo librarian. Mr Barry Duggan (30), who has since recovered from a critical but stable condition.

Three men have been questioned about the incident and a file has been forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecutions.
