THE refuse collection strike threatened for south county Dublin may go ahead, despite a decision by workers on Saturday to cooperate with the introduction of "wheelie bins" on their routes.

Shop stewards are meeting union officials this morning to review the situation and further discussions with management are expected to follow. The dispute is over the implementation date for new routes.

On Saturday the workforce agreed to accept the introduction of the bins and new work practices after being offered improved terms. However, they also requested that plans to reduce the existing routes from 17 to 12, due to be implemented this morning, be deferred until January 20th.

A SIPTU official, Mr Terry Cowap, said members wanted more time to consider the options.
