The Dublin Chamber of Commerce (DCC) has backed Fine Gael’s call for the acceleration of the National Development Plan(NDP).

Speaking at the DCC’s breakfast briefing this morning, Fine Gael leader Mr Michael Noonan called for the tightening of current government spending and new means for financing the NDP.

Mr Noonan expressed concern at current levels of public expenditure and said it could not be sustained given current levels of growth.

Earlier this year, in January, the Government conceded that its €6 billion (£4.73 billion) road-building plan may be stalled because of lack of funding.

The €1 billion allocated in the budget for national and non-national roads will be sufficient only to complete jobs already under way, according to the Construction Industry Federation.

Dublin Chamber Chief Executive Ms Gina Quin welcomed the initiative and said the NDP is absolutely critical to ensuring the sound future of Ireland's economic environment.

"Innovative use of the PPP has to be actioned in order to secure accelerated delivery of Ireland's infrastructure needs," she said
