A Dublin cardiologist was shot dead at a Boston hospital yesterday. Dr Brian McGovern, who trained at the Mater Hospital, Dublin, was shot in an office at Massachusetts General Hospital.
The body of a woman employee was also found in the office. Hospital sources indicated they believed she shot Dr McGovern. Police said there was no attacker on the loose.
The president of Massachusetts General Hospital, Dr Peter L. Slavin, said staff were "deeply shocked and tremendously saddened" by the shootings.
"Brian McGovern was a much-loved care-giver, a wonderful colleague and a widely respected expert on cardiac arrhythmias. He was an extraordinarily devoted and caring physician, who treated his patients and their families with great compassion and kindness," Dr Slavin said.
Dr McGovern joined the hospital in 1981. He completed fellowships in cardiology and cardiac electrophysiology there.
Last night, police contacted his wife, Anne, and their daughters.
Dr McGovern was also an assistant professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School.
