A Dublin man accused of murder stabbed his sister's boyfriend 39 times, a week after she had a row with the victim, a jury in the Central Criminal Court was told yesterday.

Mr John Paul Hayes (22), of Belcamp Green, Coolock, has denied murdering Mr Francis Moore (33) at his home on Coultry Road, Ballymun, on June 13th 1999.

Mr Paul McDermott SC, prosecuting, said that the accused man had been staying at the flat where his sister and her boyfriend, Mr Moore, were living. The accused and the deceased had been friends, he said.

The court heard that Mr Moore and the accused man's sister had a "tempestuous relationship" and a row had developed between them, resulting in the accused man's sister moving out of the flat. A week later Mr Moore was found dead on the balcony of the flat with multiple stab wounds.

Mr McDermott said it was the State's case that the accused man had stabbed Mr Moore repeatedly, inflicting 39 stab wounds, seven puncture wounds and a number of incise wounds, resulting in his death.

Mr McDermott said that another man may also have been in the flat at the time, but a palm print attributed to the accused man had been found on one of two bloodied knives found at the scene. He said this would contribute to the jury being convinced that the accused man was guilty of the "ferocious, violent and bloody attack carried out on the deceased".

The trial continues today.
