A Dublin man who was convicted of the repeated rape of two Australian women has been sentenced to 17 years in prison at the Central Criminal Court today.
Barry McGee (20), of Foxfield Grove, Raheny, had pleaded guilty to 13 separate counts of rape, false imprisonment, threatening to kill and sexually assaulting the women at their Rathmines flat in May of last year.
The convicted man subjected his victims to every possible humiliation, degradation and indignity, Mr Justice Paul Carney said, indicating that the only thing in McGee's favour was his early guilty plea.
McGee showed no remorse, investigating officer Det Sgt George McGeary said, adding that the case was one of the most gruesome and harrowing he had dealt with in his career.
McGee was completely unco-operative when arrested by gardai, he stated.
Giving evidence, both victims spoke of the devastating effect the attack had on their lives. They both now intend to leave the country.
Mr Justice Carney delivered 17-year sentences on the counts of rape and false imprisonment, and eight years for the threats to kill, with all sentences to run concurrently. The final two years were suspended.
He certified McGee as a sex offender with 10 years post-release supervision.
