Sexual molestation case nears end

The trial of a radio personality accused of sexually molesting four young girls has reached its concluding stages after a 14-day hearing at the Central Criminal Court.

The jury of nine men and three women has been addressed by counsel for the prosecution, Mr Patrick J. McCarthy SC, and for the defence, Mr Blaise O'Carroll SC, after the hearing of evidence ended.

It will begin its deliberations when it has been charged by Mr Justice Quirke.

The accused man, now 66, has pleaded not guilty to 33 charges alleging sexual assaults on four females on dates from May 1974 to January 1989.

He denies one charge each of attempted carnal knowledge and attempted rape of two girls, and a further 31 charges of indecent assault involving them and two other girls, all of them under 15 at the time.

73-year-old man jailed for rape

A 73-year-old man who told a jury he went "clubbing" with a teenage girl has been jailed for three years by Mr Justice Butler for orally raping her while a guest of her alcoholic mother.

Patrick Carty, an ex-customs officer, formerly of Ballsbridge, Dublin, was also jailed for a concurrent two years for sexually assaulting a girl, then 17 years old, who asked that he be named in media reports. His name was added to the sexual offenders' register.

A Central Criminal Court jury took three hours after a five-day trial in November to convict him of the oral rape and two charges of sexual assault in July 2000 in Co Kildare. The jury also found him not guilty of a charge of rape.

Mr Justice Butler said the sentences were at the lower end of the scale for these offences because of Carty's age and health.
