Sportswear giants Adidas are the new sponsors of the Dublin City Marathon after local Dublin radio station 98FM completed their four-year association with the event.

The marathon, which is staged in October, attracts thousands of athletes each year. Olympic 5000m silver medallist Sonia O'Sullivan won the ladies race in 2000.

The marathon has gained in popularity over the years with 9,500 athletes competing last October compared to the modest 3,300 participants in 1997.

98FM chief executive, Dan Healy, spearheaded the four-year sponsorship of the event.

"We (98FM) wanted to help an important Dublin community event and we have achieved what we set out to do. We are delighted to hand the marathon on to the new sponsors and we look forward to watching its continued growth," he said.

Adidas already sponsor seven leading international marathons including the world's oldest and most prestigious 26 mile race in Boston.

Paris, London, Rotterdam, Prague, Madrid and Berlin are the other city marathons with Adidas sponsorship.
