The threat of industrial action by nurses at one of Dublin's major acute hospitals could be replicated across the health services, according to the general secretary of the Irish Nurses' Organisation, Mr Liam Doran.

Nurses at Beaumont Hospital's accident and emergency (A&E) department have served notice for industrial action for December 11th because of pressure of work and poor management structures.

Mr Doran said last night the problem was not unique to the hospital.

"We are not balloting other nurses at the moment but we are certainly talking to members in other hospitals about the situation.

"The frustration highlighted by our members in Beaumont today can readily be replicated elsewhere and will lead to similar action if not addressed."

Mr Doran added that what was needed was a "systems overhaul".
