The event is celebrating its 50th anniversary, and news of the record-breaking performance comes with three days yet to run.

Artistic director Loughlin Deegan said festival takings were a third higher than last year, even though the curtain had yet to fall on the event.

The Ulster Bank Dublin Theatre Festival is billed as the oldest English-speaking theatre festival in the world. On Sunday it will conclude a programme that featured examples of Irish and International theatre including 33 shows from 13 countries.

"An enormously dedicated festival staff can claim ownership of this huge success and we wish to thank all the audience members who made it possible."
