The business consortium behind the plan to build a €7 billion theme park in north county Dublin said today the development would employ 40,000 people directly and attract 37 million tourists annually.

United Entertainment Partners (UEP) said it will begin a formal planning application for the 2,500-acre park when Fingal County Council replies to its outline submissions.

UEP forecast the planned 'Vega City' would net the Exchequer an additional tax dividend of €1 billion. It also announced property developer Mr Owen O'Callaghan would chair the project.

UEP said it would finance the necessary infrastructure necessitated by the park, including a 22-kilometre monorail linking Dublin Airport with Vega City and a connection to the Luas line.

Mr O'Callaghan said: "The Vega City project represents a once-off opportunity to do something really special on both a national and international level."

"The convergence of so many infrastructural developments both at the airport and nearby makes north County Dublin an attractive potential location for this investment. Subject to the County Council's acceptance of the Vega City concept, our next step will be to commence the development of a formal planning application," he added.
