A new hazardous waste reprocessing plant was formally opened today at Dublin Port.
Indaver Ireland's solvent blending plant is licensed to process 20,000 tonnes per year.
Currently, most waste solvent is exported for incineration but the new facility will recycle the waste into fuel which can be used, for instance, in cement production.
The facility is an extension of Indaver's Dublin Port operation and includes an acceptance area where waste suitable for blending will be checked and categorised. It also includes a tanker loading/unloading and a series of holding tanks and mixing tanks.
Speaking at the opening today, Minister of State at the Department of Environment Noel Ahern said the plant showed that "the dynamic private sector waste industry in Ireland is actively identifying gaps in infrastructure provision".
"Indeed, the private sector's work in the hazardous waste management area is vital to industry, and is economically invaluable," Mr Ahern added.
Ireland produces over 100,000 tonnes of hazardous liquid waste every year.
