A MASTERS student of classics at Trinity College Dublin arrives in Turkey today to represent Ireland at the first Mr World Contest. The final of the competition takes, place on September 16th.
"Most of my friends make a little joke out of it, which is a good thing," says Danny Plewman (24). "To take it too seriously would be a mistake. That being said, I'm not taking it too lightly either."
The Dubliner, who has been modelling in his spare time, won the Mr Ireland contest held simultaneously with the Miss Ireland contest in Limerick last year. "It was like the Miss Ireland contest," he says. "They were looking for intelligence, charm and looks. There was an interview and contests in day and evening wear."
Mr Plewman will fly to Istanbul today where he will compete against men from 51 other countries. The winner is guaranteed £15,000 in contracts and £10,000 in cash. Fitness assessments will be made at the Club Med complex near Antalya.
Contestants will then return to Istanbul where, at the show itself on September 16th, they will don day wear, evening wear and boxer shorts.
His main objective is to enjoy himself. "My priority then is to finish my studies. If I win, of course, I may have to rearrange my plans, but I'll cross that bridge when and if I come to it."
