A former minister for education has been elected cathaoirleach of Dún Laoghaire/Rathdown council.
The Labour Party's Ms Niamh Breathnach was appointed today after a deal was agreed to rotate the position with Fine Gael.
Labour has the largest representation on the 28-member council with nine seats, while Fine Gael has six after the local elections earlier this month.
Ms Breathnach addressed the first sitting of the new council today, saying that in the election "the people of Dún Laoghaire Rathdown sought a new beginning".
In the South, Fine Gael's Mr PJ Sheehan was today appointed chair of Cork County Council, with the support of independent Mr Noel Collins. Fine Gael has established control of the council chamber.
In Kerry County Council, Fianna Fáil's Mr Ned O'Sullivan has been elected Mayor while Clare County Council will elect a chair later today.
