Broadcaster Eamon Dunphy is to host a new hour-long weekly show on RTÉ Radio 1 in the autumn, the station has announced.
The presenter told The Irish Times yesterday that he expected it would be "something completely different", but neither current affairs nor sport-led.
It was recently confirmed that Dunphy is to leave Dublin radio station Newstalk 106 after presenting its flagship breakfast programme for two years.
This followed two months of negotiations between him and station executives about an optional one-year extension to his contract, which expires next month.
"I'm very glad to be moving to RTÉ. It is a compliment and I'm very happy," he said yesterday. "I have had two years with Newstalk, working six days a week and 18-hour days."
Although he is still in discussions with RTÉ about where the show will appear on the station's schedule, he said he has a clear idea of the type of show he wishes to present.
"Basically, we won't be starting until the autumn, so I don't want to say too much about it," Dunphy said. "But it will be in the talk area, hopefully, not current affairs or sport-led. It will also be a bit of fun as well."
Some sources at the station have speculated that Dunphy may take over the Saturday morning slot currently occupied by fellow presenter Derek Mooney, who is due to host a new daily programme from 3pm to 5pm, called Afternoon Ireland.
Both Dunphy and a spokeswoman for RTÉ Radio 1 declined to comment on the amount he would be paid.
