A delegation from the anti-Agreement Democratic Unionist Party has hit out at the British government’s refusal to give details on the peace proposals aimed at saving the Belfast Agreement.

Emerging from a 90-minute meeting with Northern Ireland Secretary, Dr John Reid, DUP deputy leader Mr Peter Robinson claimed the proposals may never be made public if they are not endorsed by those who took part in the Weston Park talks.

He said: "They will take stock after the pro-Agreement parties have seen the document as to whether the public and indeed its representatives by the Ulster Democratic Unionist Party will ever see that document."

The East Belfast MP did not rule out mounting a legal challenge to any decision not to publish the proposals.

Accusing Dr Reid of stonewalling the six-strong DUP team as they pressed for details on the document, Mr Robinson said: "I think it's absolutely outrageous that the Secretary of State is not prepared to give an undertaking that at some stage the DUP will see these proposals.

Mr Robinson said his party would now be seeking an urgent meeting with the Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission to voice its concerns.

Before the meeting with Dr Reid, he said there is a human rights obligation to publicise the new proposals.
