The 300,000 British military personnel who served in the North are to be commemorated in a special service in London in September.
On September 10th, tribute will be paid to the 763 who died and all those who served in the years since 1969.
Democratic Ulster Unionist MP Jeffrey Donaldson said the service in St Paul's Cathedral would be a fitting tribute but that a permanent memorial should also be built.
"I have been pressing the government for some time to recognise the contribution and ultimately I would like to see a memorial created somewhere in London to the soldiers and other service personnel who lost their lives for the cause of peace in Northern Ireland," he said.
"This memorial service is at least a first step along the path of recognition for those who lost their loved ones and for those who have serious injuries or disabilities for which it is now a real struggle for them."
