The government quit following a report criticising Dutch leaders for their role in the 1995 massacre of Muslims Srebrenica.

General Ad van Baal, the army chief of staff, had come under pressure to accept responsibility for mistakes made by military commanders. He has now resigned.

Premier Mr Wim Kok's government took responsibility - but not the blame - for the peacekeeping mission that ended in a week long orgy of murder by Bosnian Serb troops under General Ratko Mladic, a war criminal who remains at large.

The government will remain in power until an election is called later this month and Mr Kok faces questions on the massacre in parliament.
